Synopsis: Gardens of Concrete is a two-part documentary which explores the consequences of overdevelopment of popular seaside destinations in Bulgaria and Spain. Part 1: “Sunny Beach” is the story of one of Bulgaria’s most popular Black Sea resorts – its rise from the sands following a Communist Party decree in the 1950’s and its fall in the late 1990’s in the years of chaos and crime that followed the collapse of the Communist system. Sunny Beach was intended to be a green oasis for families, with the idea of tranquility and space embedded in it from its inception. It was oriented towards foreign tourists and was practically one of Communist Bulgaria’s idyllic picture cards to the world. However, after the fall of Communism the green oasis on the golden beach quickly turned into a jungle of concrete and the setting of several execution-style murders. Today Sunny Beach has more than 200 000 beds compared to the 30 000 maximum allowed by the size of the coastline. Its sewage system cannot cope. Most of its gardens and trees are gone. And family entertainment has given way to alcohol tours for teenagers.
